When I was in Jerusalem this past June, I was able to see the actual steps Jesus walked on as he and his disciples, Peter, James, and John, descended to walk from Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives and into the garden of Gethsemane. The steps were already ancient when Jesus and his disciples walked on them. It is a historical path that leads downhill, then up again to the base of the hill. I walked in the garden of ancient olive trees. Some say that they are from the time of Christ. Scientists know through genetic testing that the trees are off-shoots of the original trees that Jesus would have seen. The people who take care of the garden make olive oil from the fruit of the trees, and use the olive pits for Rosary beads. This story about Jesus is part of Holy Week, but you’ll know about it before that as you learn the “Mysteries” recited in the Rosary. This is the first of Five Sorrowful Mysteries .
