“Isaiah, one of the greatest of the prophets, appeared at a critical moment in Israel’s history. The Northern Kingdom collapsed, under the hammerlike blows of Assyria, in 722/721 B.C., and in 701 Jerusalem itself saw the army of Sennacherib drawn up before its walls. In the year that Uzziah, king of Judah, died (742), Isaiah received his call to the prophetic office in the Temple of Jerusalem. Close attention should be given to chap. 6, where this divine summons to be the ambassador of the Most High is circumstantially described.”

“From Catholic Answers“. Isaiah (Yesa yahu = Yahweh is salvation) is one of the most outstanding and most important of the prophets. He was born around the year 700 B.C. and lived in Jerusalem. There is a good basis for thinking that he belonged to a distinguished priestly and perhaps noble family, judging from his education and culture and from his contacts with the court and nobility of the kingdom of Judah. He was married, with two children.

In the year 740, on the death of King Uzziah, he received his calling as a prophet in a vision in the Temple of Jerusalem as he himself describes:

“I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. . . . And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ . . . And I said: ‘Woe to me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Then flew one of the seraphim to me, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth, and said: ‘Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin forgiven.’ And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me’” (Is. 6:1-8).”

“Holy, Holy, Holy Lord”

“Right before the Eucharistic Prayer, the congregation joins all the angels and saints in singing the unending hymn of praise to God: “Holy, Holy, Holy.” These words are sung by the angels in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, as well as in the Book of Revelation. The word “Hosanna” is from the Hebrew word meaning “Save us!” The people acclaimed Jesus with this word when he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Blessed be Jesus, Christ, who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Seraph Mosaic In Hagia Sophia In Instanbul Turkey

This is a copy of a seraph mosaic in the Hagia Sophie Cathedral/Mosque/Museum in Istanbul, Turkey. The seraph plays a role in Isaiah’s life when it holds a burning ember to Isaiah’s lips to purify him. The seraph has wrapped his six sets of wings around his body, making him look like a cocoon.

The magnificent oratorio, “The Messiah” by Handel, presents the “Book of Isaiah” through glorious music. Below, there are excerpts from Holy Scripture and the “Book of Isaiah” that are sung. It is a popular event for many symphonies and churches to present “The Messiah” at Christmas. It is a thrilling experience to hear the music and listen to the lyrics that come from the prophet, Isaiah.

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem,
and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The

In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple.

Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they hovered.

One cried out to the other:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!

All the earth is filled with his glory!”

At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.

Then I said, “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

He touched my mouth with it. “See,” he said, “now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.”

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”

“Here I am,” I said; “send me!”

Our Art Project-Make A Mosaic Of Anything You’d Like!

A mosaic is an art work that uses pieces of broken tile, then piece by piece the broken tile (or paper) make a picture.This is a paper mosaic that was once a solid watercolor painting. I cut it up and glued it to a black paper background. Not only was this a mosaic, but it is also a collage. A collage is anything that is glued to paper, canvas, or wood. Try it! It is fun and your mosaic can be very beautiful.

Our Materials

For another mosaic, try glueing pieces of colorful crepe paper to a strong paper (watercolor paper) or cardboard. It’s fun and colorful!
