Week Eight– Christ the King

The Solemnity of Christ the King

November 24, 2016–The Last Day of the LiturgicalYear

This Sunday, November 20, Solemnity of Christ the King is celebrated in our church and in our classroom.

In our classroom, we’ll abbreviate the readings and adapt the hymn, “Alleluia Sing to Jesus” for the children.

Since this is the last class before the Thanksgiving Holiday, we’ll have a longer than usual art session. The students love doing art and painting in particular. We’ll be doing watercolors with a Thanksgiving theme.

We Read The Entire Psalm

The Lord is My Shepherd PS 23:1-3A, 4, 5, 6
R. (1) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
Beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side
With your rod and your staff
that give me courage.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

We Read the Children’s First Version

The Lord is my shepherd;
I do not need more.
He leads me to rest in green pastures.
He leads me to drink from still waters.
Even though I walk through a valley of darkness
I am not afraid. I see no evil.
Your rod and staff make me feel safe. You give me courage.
You give me a Thanksgiving meal.
Like at Baptism, you anoint my head with oil.
My heart overflows with joy.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life.
I will live in God’s house forever.

Amen.

We Sing

Alleluia sing to Jesus
His the scepter, his the throne.

Alleluia sing to Jesus
His the crown for him alone.

Our Lesson for Today

As Catholics, we must help others. Jesus teaches us to be humble, kind, serve the poor, educate the young, visit the sick and to love people.

We Create!

Here are some watercolor samples for the children:

The Mass Service

The Solemnity of Christ the King, Celebrated on Sunday November 20, 2016

The Kingdom is Humble

“Jesus inaugurates a kingdom that grows through humble
acts of service. Even as her freedom to carry out her
ministries is threatened, the Church must patiently continue
to serve the poor, educate the young, welcome the migrant,
visit the prisoner, heal the sick, bury the dead, and love others.”

Readings of the Day

Hymn–“Alleluia Sing to Jesus”

Hear the Tune

Lyrics

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus;
His the sceptre, his the throne;
Alleluia! his the triumph,
His the victory alone!
Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion
Thunder like a mighty flood:
“Jesus out of every nation
Has redeemed us by his blood.”

Alleluia! Not as orphans
Are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! he is near us;
Faith believes nor questions how.
Though the cloud from sight received him,
When the forty days were o’er,
Shall our hearts forget his promise:
“I am with you evermore.”

Alleluia! Bread of angels,
Here on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! here the sinful
Flee to you from day to day.
Intercessor, friend of sinners,
Earth’s redeemer, hear our plea
Where the songs of all the sinless
Weep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal,
Lord omnipotent we own;
Alleluia! born of Mary,
Earth your footstool, heaven your throne.
As within the veil you entered,
Robed in flesh, our great high priest;
Here on earth both priest and victim
In the Eucharistic feast.
