“Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. Touch our hearts and make them like your own.”
from Manual of Indulgences USCCB.org
Hello parents. Welcome to the SundaySchoolUpdates.com summer art projects that begin with the “Sacred Heart of Jesus.” The goal is to learn more deeply about Jesus Christ through art. This week, Friday June 19th, is the kickoff for a weekly art project accompanied by a significant reading for the family. There will be eight projects, ending on August 8. Please note that any art materials can be used–watercolors, markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc. Whatever you have on hand will work. If you want to make one purchase, I suggest you buy watercolor paper because all the projects can be done on this paper, but watercolor painting especially needs this heavy, strong paper. All age groups can try these projects. I will offer simple to more sophisticated each week for the different age groups. Have a lovely time. Please let me know if you have any questions, suggestions, or photos of your child’s art. My e-mail address is ccgoldin@mac.com. Thanks, Connie Goldin

The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Art–The First Summer Project
I used large-size coffee filters like the ones used in commercial coffee makers, that groups use. You can use the regular size, “Mr. Coffee” basket type filter, as well. I used liquid watercolor paint dribbled onto the coffee filters, which I had on a paper plate to catch the extra paint. Regular “dry-cake” watercolors work fine, too. The coffee filters dry very quickly. When dry, paint or smear glue on the flip side of the painted filter. Press down with the palms of the hands to glue onto a piece of watercolor paper. I used Mod Podge but any white school glue works well. When completely dry, use a Sharpie or other permanent marker pens, to draw the heart in side, or outside, the circle. I used the blue-painted coffee filter to make a cross. Add the cross at the top, and then draw “X”s on the heart to represent the crown of thorns. I embellished the red around the heart, and the blue cross, with a fine tip black marker and a white gel fine tipped pen (any other color fine tipped marker will do). Here is what the process looks like:
Please Note: I purchase all my supplies, such as those highlighted above, from Amazon.com and SundaySchoolUpdates.com is a labor of love.

Father, we rejoice in the gifts of love we have received from the heart of Jesus your Son. Open our hearts to share his life and continue to bless us with his love. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.” Amen.
