Connie’s “Genesis” Patchwork Quilt

Welcome to Sunday School Updates!

Hello from Connie Goldin

This summer, I decided to illustrate the first Chapter of Genesis in the Bible. I used 6″ by 6″ pre-fab canvas squares, and various types of brushes and paints, including acrylics, gouache (a creamy water color paint), and gesso (a base coat or thick paint). The “quilt” above tells the story of God creating the world. I loved the experience and I have more to come. Invite your children to draw or paint some of the stories above!

Sunday School Updates is an enrichment website for families preparing their child or children for First Holy Communion. Everyone is invited!  Families can decide which Bible readings from the USCCB.org we’ll be learning about in “Genesis”: and there are excellent resources in children’s literature that are available from libraries and the internet. Here are some that I have enjoyed, shared with my class, and have cited on my blog. Here are ones that I have enjoyed: Catholic Baby’s First BIBLE, The Catholic BIBLE for Children, Catholic Book of Bible Stories, and The Catholic Children’s Bible.

Summer Sunday School

Starting with God’s Love, Care, and Creation of the Whole World…

He’s Got The Whole World in His Hands is a magnificently illustrated book, by artist Kadir Nelson, of the spiritual song that celebrates God’s love. It is a treasure for a family library.

A Psalm Celebrating God’s Creation of the Universe Through His Hands

Excerpt from Psalm 95:1-7 from USCCB.org

“Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;

cry out to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before him with a song of praise,

joyfully sing out our psalms.

For the LORD is the great God,

the great king over all gods,

Whose hand holds the depths of the earth;

who owns the tops of the mountains.

The sea and dry land belong to God,

who made them, formed them by hand.

Enter, let us bow down in worship;

let us kneel before the LORD who made us.

For he is our God,

we are the people he shepherds,

the sheep in his hands.”

“May God Hold You in the Palm of his Hands”

An Old Irish Blessing

“May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

The Whole World Art Project

Print with Painted Sun Rays

This is a fun art project showing the beautiful world God has created. It uses painted bubble wrap to make a print on watercolor paper. Little kids can try this, too. Here are the steps:

Use paint to make a big circle on bubble wrap. Then paint on colors of the earth to depict water, land, and vegetation. Let dry. If the circle is misshapen like mine was, invert a plate on top of it and trace with a Sharpie. Then cut out the traced circle. Center, then glue with Elmer’s or school glue onto a piece of sturdy watercolor paper. Then decorate with sun rays or make hand prints by painting your hands with washable the poster paint.

Idea for Bubble Wrap Print-making from MermaidsCreation.

Materials and Method

World Print in Small Version

Take a small piece of paper, the size of a greeting card. Cut bubble wrap into a small circle.

Paint the circle with earth and water colors. Invert the painted circle onto the white card paper.

Carefully peel or lift the painted circle off of the paper.

God Creates the Sea Creatures

Genesis, CHAPTER 1:20-22, USCCB

“Then God said: Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures, and on the earth let birds fly beneath the dome of the sky.

God created the great sea monsters and all kinds of crawling living creatures with which the water teems, and all kinds of winged birds. God saw that it was good,

and God blessed them, saying: Be fertile, multiply, and fill the water of the seas; and let the birds multiply on the earth.”

Poem Project

Encourage your child to write a short poem about “God’s Handprint on the World.”

Here is a sample of a poem written by Elizabeth Skiba on PoetrySoup.com:

“God’s Handprint”

“We see God’s footprints, each and every day

The trees, the mountains, the sea

He made this beautiful world For me

He made the moon, stars, the sun

I love everything that He have [has] done

I am so blessed, happy and free

He made this wonderful world For me

Many of us love what we see

Beautiful flowers, even rain on a stormy day

Fresh scent of the green grass

He gave this beautiful world For us”
