Sunday School Updates–2022-2023–Week 9–“The First Public Miracle”

For Parents To Teach To Their Children

Children in my First Reconciliation Class practice saying their prayers as a group, including: “The Lord’s Prayer,” “Hail Mary,” “The Glory Be To The Father,” and “An Act of Contrition.” We say the prayers standing up, and repeat them several times out loud. By the end of three “run throughs” the children sound stronger and more confident. They children will make their confession, face to face with the priest, in a confessional.  The students will be making their First Confession in December, which begins the preparing for First Holy Communion Preparation starting in January.

Jesus’ First Miracle At The Wedding At Cana

Our Reading

“The Wedding at Cana” USCCB John, Chapter 2:1-12 “…the beginning of his signs.”

“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.

When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

[And] Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servers, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’

Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus told them, ‘Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.’ So they took it.

And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom

and said to him, ‘Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.’

Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

After this, he and his mother, [his] brothers, and his disciples went down to Capernaum and stayed there only a few days.”

The Public Ministry and The First Public Miracle

The “Baptism of Jesus” begins Jesus’ public ministry. “The Wedding in Cana” shows that Jesus had the power to impact the natural world such as changing water into wine. “Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.” John, Chapter 2:11

The art project for this reading is the simplest art project possible! I had a large rectangle of cardboard from packing material (31 inches long and 23 inches high) and I used pastel chalk for the drawing. That’s it!

Read this passage with your children either in a Catholic Bible or in a book of Catholic Bible stories for children. It is an important story in the chronology of Jesus’ life.
