Sunday School Updates– Week Nine–2021-2022– “All Things Bright and Beautiful”

For Parents To Teach To Their Children

Saturday, October 23, from 9:00-9:20, kids and parents from my First Holy Communion class joined me on Zoom. I give a quick, 20 minute class so that the children can get going with their day and not lose interest in the conversation. Since we meet for our hour class only once a month, I like to add the Zoom meeting to keep the children moving along with the material. The parents have the responsibility to teach the class materials to their children at home during the month.

Here is what we covered in twenty minutes:

We started with Catholic prayers, every child should know!
We went through the “Ten Commandments’ and what they meant.
I introduced “Examination of Conscience” and talked about the definition of “conscience.”
I read  “An Act of Contrition” to the kids and asked them to write it out, one line a day, to help them memorize it.
I read a passage from a charming kids’ book, I’m A Saint In the Making, on contrition and forgiveness.
Kids were great!

“God has a special mission for each of us! With engaging prose and delightful illustrations, I’m a Saint in the Making reminds children of their unique call from God to live with mission and love. By recounting the highlights of the stories of both well-known and newer saints (including John Paul II, Mary MacKillop, Augustus Tolton, Teresa of Calcutta, Juan Diego and Chiara Badano) in relatable lessons, the book helps readers learn that there is no one single way to live a life of sanctity. I’m a Saint in the Making offers simple but impactful suggestions for ways children can offer acts of prayer, service, and love. Resources for parents, teachers, and caregivers at the end of book provide support for adults as they seek to encourage and accompany their young saints in the making.”

[1] This is my commandment, that you love one another
that your joy may be full.
[2] This is my commandment, that you love one another
that your joy may be full,
that your joy may be full, that your joy may be full.
This is my commandment, that you love one another
that your joy may be full.

“All Things Bright and Beautiful”

“Have mercy, Son of David!
Give us your eyes to see
That we may see the Kingdom
In its simplicity.”

Hymn for the Morning, “Aleteia”

The Greatest Commandment

You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

 “The Blind Bartimaeus”

Mark, Chapter 10:46-52

“As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out and say,
‘Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.’
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
But he kept calling out all the more,
‘Son of David, have pity on me.’
Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
‘Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.’
He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus said to him in reply, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’
The blind man replied to him, ‘Master, I want to see.’
Jesus told him, ‘Go your way; your faith has saved you.’
Immediately he received his sight
and followed him on the way.”

Hymn from “Aleteia” October 4

“Have mercy, Son of David!
By mercy set us free.
Have mercy, Son of David!
O Lord, that we may see.
For we, like Bartimaeus,
Cry out with heart and soul.
We ask for faith to follow,
For faith to make us whole.”

“Have mercy, Son of David!
Give us your eyes to see
That we may see the Kingdom
In its simplicity.
May we behold the glory,
The majesty and grace
Of your mysterious beauty
Alive in every face.”

“GOD MADE US”

An Excerpt from The New Saint Joseph FIRST COMMUNION CATECHISM

“…God made all things.” Pages 7-8

“God made the earth and the sky.

God also made the sun.

God made the moon and the stars.

God made night and day.

God made rain and snow.

God made hills and mountains.

God made oceans and rivers.

God made the trees and flowers.

God made all animals, big and little.

God made the fishes in the water.

God made the birds in the sky.

God made the Angels.

Angels are spirits.

They have no bodies.

They know much more than we do.

They have great power.”

Our Art Project–Cross with Reconciliation Background–Violet

This is a collage so you’ll need scissors and glue.  I made the cross then cut it out to paste onto the violet card stock. I used watercolor paper, and a sheet of violet card stock for background. I traced a ceramic cross I have in my house using an aqua glitter pen. Then I traced a small magnifying glass to make overlapping circles. Depending on the age and interest of the child, the detail takes a while. This project can be simplified using only one piece of paper and decorating the cross in any way your child would like.
