For Parents To Teach To Your Children

Our Readings

USCCB Matthew, CHAPTER 22:15-22

“Paying Taxes to the Emperor.”

“The Pharisees went off
and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech.
They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying,
“Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man
and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion,
for you do not regard a person’s status.
Tell us, then, what is your opinion:
Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”
Knowing their malice, Jesus said,
“Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?
Show me the coin that pays the census tax.”
Then they handed him the Roman coin.
He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?”
They replied, “Caesar’s.”
At that he said to them,
“Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God.”

USCCB Luke CHAPTER 15:3-7

“The Lost Sheep” A Parable

“God is like a shepherd who has a hundred sheep.

One day he loses one of them in the mountains. He leaves the others

to go look for it. When he finds it, he puts it over his shoulders and carries

it back to the sheepfold. He calls to his friends, “Rejoice with me, I have found my lost sheep.”

“Our Father Who Art in Heaven”

Here are important prayers that children can easily memorize with practice:

“The Lord’s Prayer”

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.”

‘Lord’s Prayer’ from Loyola Press

“The Sign of the Cross”

+In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.+
Or,
+In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.+

“The Glory Be”

+Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen.+

“The Hail Mary”

+Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of (our) death. Amen.+

“The Our Father”

+Our Father, Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

The Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.+

“Grace Before Meals”

+Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive,
from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.+

“The Guardian Angel Prayer”

+Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom
God’s love commits me here, ever this day, (or night) be at my side, to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen.+

“Shepherd”

By Amy Welborn, Loyola Kids Book of Catholic Signs & Symbols, Page 6

“A shepherd cares for his sheep, helping them to find food and water.

He protects them from harm. That’s what God does: he cares

for us as a shepherd cares for a flock of sheep. Jesus tells us

that he is the good Shepherd. He knows us, and we know him.

If we are lost, Jesus will find us so we can be safe with him again.

From early times,

Christian showed Jesus as a shepherd

caring for us, his sheep.”

Our Family Art Project– The Importance of the Lamb

“Wool, Food, Care-Taking, L0ving,

Help your child, if they are young, with this cut and paste craft project. I looked at a website that shows how to draw a lamb or sheep. I copied it freehand and then I used a Kwik Stix, tempera stick, to color in the lamb. Next, I cut it out and glued it to a 6″ by 6″ Pre-Fab, canvas pallet (any art tool will work). I used a green Kwik Stix paint stick to color around the sheep’s “pasture.” Explore what you and your child might do if they have a preference for another animal to draw, or cut out from a magazine. Enjoy!
